Objective: Your players will learn about team shape and the key principles of play in 4v4 (these are: One player is up front for penetration, two players provide the width, one player holds back to supply depth).
Set up
Mark out a grid with flat cones with a
goal at either end.The size of the playing area depends
on the age and ability of your players. Can vary from 30 yd x 20 yd
up to 40 yd x 25 yd.
Generally, the younger or less able the player, the bigger
the playing area should be.
How to play
Two teams of four play 'normal' soccer.
Coaching points
The team in
possession of the ball should be encouraged to use the entire
playing area in terms of length and width (spread out, keep
possession).
Encourage
the team that doesn't have the ball to prevent goals from being scored and get the ball back
by employing the basic principles of
defence (pressure, cover, balance).
